Ever since I started working at The Human Solution, I’ve been increasingly thankful for all the ergonomic items and accessories that are on and around my desk. By themselves they don’t seem like much, but combined they make a huge difference. As it turns out, not only are my ergonomic accessories — like my standing desk and treadmill desk — making me more comfortable by allowing me to stay active while working, they’re also making my heart healthier at the same time.
The Wall Street Journal recently reported that the American Heart Association recommended taking an average of 10,000 steps daily. This often results in weight loss, improved glucose tolerance, and other heart health benefits. Unfortunately, a 2010 study suggested that Americans typically only average about 5,117 steps every day, almost 5.000 steps short of the AHA’s recommendation. It’s an issue that even affects people who exercise regularly.
There are plenty of ways to increase your step count and get healthier by doing so. Taking the stairs instead of the elevator, walking the dog, parking at the far end of the parking lot, or even marching in place in front of the TV during commercials will all help get you active. The most effective way to get moving, however, is to simply walk whenever you have the chance.
Converting your desk at work to a sit-stand treadmill desk is a superb way to increase your step count. Consider how much time you sit at your desk — if you were to stand and walk for even two miles a day on top of your “average” 5,000 steps, you would add roughly 4,000 steps to your total. A treadmill desk will allow you to continue being productive while you walk, with the added benefit of improved blood flow and more energy at work, even in the morning.
Kick the Keurig machine to the curb and energize your morning with a light walk at a treadmill desk — your body (and your brain) will appreciate it.
